Step away from the pressure to make something “perfect” and spend four weeks experimenting, layering, and discovering what happens when different art materials meet. Mixed Media Lab is an adult creative exploration class designed for people who want to play with materials, learn new techniques, and build confidence through experimentation. Each week we’ll explore a different combination of media and processes, working with materials such as acrylic, watercolour, ink, collage, drawing media, pastels, specialty papers, texture mediums, and more. Rather than following the exact same formula every week, the focus is on creative problem-solving, exploration, and finding your own visual voice. You’ll learn how to combine materials successfully, build interesting surfaces, create depth through layering, use colour and texture intentionally, and turn unexpected marks and materials into part of the artwork. Some projects may begin with a guided technique or theme, but there will always be room to make the work your own. You might layer painted papers into a collage, combine loose watercolour with ink and drawing, experiment with texture and gel medium, or discover how contrasting materials can completely change the feel of a piece. This class is meant to feel more like an art laboratory than a paint-by-number workshop. Curiosity is encouraged. Happy accidents are welcome. There is no expectation that everyone’s finished piece should look the same. Mixed Media Lab is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced artists who want to loosen up, try new materials, or get out of a creative rut. You don’t need to know how to draw or paint before coming in — just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment. All materials are provided, so you’ll have the chance to sample a range of art supplies without having to invest in everything yourself.
